Chapter Thirteen

Ben

“Mr. Schilling.” He stood as I approached my father’s office.

“Randall, is he in?”

“Yes, sir, but he’s on a conference call.”

I walked in.

“No, that’s not acceptable. Do what you have to, to change their minds—” He looked up at me with a scowl, then it dropped. “I have to call you back.” He hung up.

I walked to the small kitchen and poured myself a scotch. I picked his favorite brand, draining the glass.

He sat behind me, watching as I finished my drink. When I turned to face him, he had a telling look.

“I assume your girlfriend is the reason for this surprise visit during office hours,” he said, grinning.

“Stop trying to meddle in my affairs.”

“Melody called me.” He chuckled.

“She won’t again. Stay away from her.” I slammed down the glass and headed toward the door.

“That’s a shame. She would be a great asset to Vibe. You could have her exclusively.”

I stopped, already knowing his ultimate move. This was a game to him, but I wasn’t going to allow him to use Melody as a pawn. I stared into the eyes I once respected. Even with deeper creases, they still held his poker face.

“I’m not coming back, Father.”

“Son, I won’t be around forever, and someone has to take over Harper.”

“Gianna can have it.”

“We both know your uncle will fight her for it and win, and she won’t be able to handle the defeat.”

My uncle didn’t care who he destroyed to get what he wanted. He had been riding my father’s coattails ever since he started Harper from the ground up.

“Look, old man, you won’t be dying for a while. When that time comes—and only then—I will personally do everything in my power to see Gianna gets the company.”

“It was your mother’s wish that it was passed down to you.”

I stalked back to where he was sitting. My father chuckled as he went to pour himself a drink.

“How does saying her name sound blasphemous from your lips?”

“She was an angel...” he said as he sat back down, nodding at me to sit across from him. He unbuttoned his jacket and reclined comfortably. “This place has your mother everywhere.” He took a sip and swirled the ice in his glass.

“Mom detested what this place had become.”

His eyes narrowed at mine, then he lifted the glass. “To Harper, she was taken away from us too soon.”

I stayed silent as he finished his drink.

“I heard you were at the beach house.”

“Melody told you?”

“Gianna did. She’s pissed that she hasn’t met her. I assumed she must be a special woman for you to take her there.”

Melody had created new memories that made the place even more special. Mom would have loved her.

“Son, I was doing you a favor by helping the girl.”

“Don’t do me any favors.”

“I owe you. I hear you worked out the lawsuit.”

“That was for Gianna. I don’t need this family’s name tainted any further.”

“We could have handled it.”

“You would have lost. We would have lost.”

“Bentley, Son, come back. You are already doing the work.
